Lives on hold as thousands of vital organ transplants don't go ahead

Families are being urged to talk about the issue as part of Organ Donation week, which gets underway off today.

Families objecting to an organ donor's wishes have led to about 3,000 potential transplants being missed in the past year, according to the NHS figures. There are now 6,133 people on the transplant waiting list.

Since 2013, six people from Swale have also died while waiting for an organ, and 18 people received a transplant past year.

Tragically, despite the fact more and more people are supporting donating their loved one's organs, there is still an urgent need for extra names on the register.

NHS Blood and Transplant is now asking more people in Northamptonshire to tell their families that they want to save lives through organ donation. Councils and organisations around the country are lighting prominent buildings pink, which is the colour of the modern donor card, in support of the crusade.

"People are dying every day because some families are not talking about donation".

"We know that many families feel enormous pride and comfort at knowing that their relative went on to save lives through the gift of organ donation".

"Please, let your family know your decision and ask them if they want to be donors".
