'The film business passed away today': Hollywood slams Oscars 'popular film' addition

The 2019 ceremony will still air on February 24, while the 2020 show will move to February 9.

Actor Rob Lowe tweeted that "The film business passed away today with the announcement of the "popular" film Oscar. It is survived by sequels, tent-poles, and vertical integration".

The details regarding eligibility in this category have not been announced - and the Academy did not say when the change would take effect - but the new award's objective is clear: make sure the box office's biggest money makers have a chance to walk away with Oscars gold. "Eligibility requirements and other key details will be forthcoming", they wrote. "Toy Story 3" was nominated for both best picture and best animated feature.

The film academy is also shifting the date for the 92nd Academy Awards to earlier in the year.

The division is not without precedent either.

It may be good news to hear that the show will be limited to three hours - some of us could go with even less, considering there's also the red carpet pre-show - but that means not all wins will be shown live.

Last year, the Academy Award for Best Picture was won by the The Shape of Water, which had taken about $170 million worldwide around the time of its win - twice the previous year's victor, Moonlight.

Next year's Oscars, which is scheduled for February 24, is unchanged. The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast.

Oscar viewership is often tied to the box-office muscle of the big nominees. The 2018 best picture victor, "The Shape of Water", had grossed $57.4 million in the United States by the time the awards aired and $63.9 million total.

Last year's best picture victor, "The Shape of Water", earned $63 million domestically and topped out at No. 10 in box office rankings during its time in theaters, according to figures from Box Office Mojo.

It is the latest attempt by the Academy to remain, in the words of its leadership, "relevant in a changing world", and to maintain its position as the premier awards ceremony for excellence in film. The Academy took to Twitter to share the exciting news on August 8, which has sparked some controversy on social media.
