Perseid Meteor Shower peaks this weekend

Once evening falls Sunday expect to see a meteor or a"shooting star" streaking across the sky every few minutes

When the debris hits the Earth's atmosphere, it's heated up and produces the light we see as a "shooting star".

The annual spectacle in the sky is typically one of the best meteor showers of the year.

This year, Europe and North America will have the best views. Under ideal conditions, we could see anywhere from 60 to 70 meteors per hour.

Because the moon reaches its new phase on August 11 - it will be just an early waxing crescent - and the shower's peak is in the early hours of August 13, the moonlight "shouldn't cause us any problems at all", said Chris Vessey, co-founder of Sidewalk Astronomers of Charlottetown.

The meteors will radiate from one central location in the northeast section of the sky, known as the constellation Perseus, from which they take their name. If bad weather does spoil your view, you can also watch the Perseid meteor shower live here on Sunday (Aug. 12) starting at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT), courtesy of the online observatory According to NASA, the best time to watch is any time between 11 p.m. and the first light of morning, when the night is darkest.

This year the most visible days are projected to be August 11-13, and NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke says the USA can expect to see as many as 60 to 70 meteors per hour during the shower's peak.

The Perseid meteor shower of 2018 is nearly upon us.

The Perseid meteors are the cosmic rubble and debris left behind in the orbital path of Comet Swift-Tuttle. A few clouds will pass by Saturday night, otherwise skies should be mostly clear. Scientists from NASA also said that camping out in the country can triple the amount of visible meteors. But not to fret, as should you miss the bulk of the meteors this weekend, though the number per hour will drop off, some stragglers should hang around until August 24.
