A team of 12 experts from Congo's health ministry will arrive in Beni on Thursday to set up a mobile lab, the ministry said.

Officials have said they now feel better prepared for Ebola outbreaks, in sharp contrast to the 2014 epidemic of the virus, which killed more than 11,000 people, mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The earlier outbreak was tackled with 3300 doses of an experimental new vaccine.

Four of six samples sent for analysis to the National Institute of Biological Research in Kinshasa, the capital, came back positive for Ebola, the ministry said.

Researchers have not yet identified the particular strain of ebola causing the new outbreak. "The major barrier will be safely accessing the affected population", Peter Salama, WHO Deputy Director-General of emergency preparedness and response, said in a statement. "This is an active conflict zone".

The province shares a border with Rwanda and Uganda, and cross-border movement is common. Once present in humans, it causes haemorrhagic fever, vomiting and diarrhoea and is spread through direct contact with body fluids. The last outbreak in Mbandaka, 1,500 miles to the west of Mangina killed at least 33 people. "This outbreak comes at a time when the country is already unstable, with millions of people caught up in humanitarian crises as a result of ongoing conflicts".
