Apple shares were in such high demand that by the time it opted for a flotation in 1980, it became the biggest stock market launch since Ford in 1956.

Its stock has soared 9% since Tuesday when Apple's third-quarter earnings exceeded Wall Street's expectations.

Last year, sales had risen to $229bn and profits to $48.4bn, making it the most profitable public-listed United States company.

The market reacted to this success and the price of Apple stocks increased.

Apple has become the world's first $1 trillion ($1,000,000,000,000) company. Some progressives take issue with all the money Apple gives back to its shareholders, almost $44 billion during the first six months of this year. In fact, while the company's iPhone earnings for the quarter grew 20% year-over-year because of higher smartphone ASPs, Apple's services revenue grew 31% year-over-year as the company has been expanding its offerings for some time now.

As we pointed out yesterday, the valuation itself doesn't mean much, but it goes to show just how drastic of a turnaround Apple was able to make just a couple of decades after being on the brink of going under.
