Bartoli had said Kyrgios would never win a grand slam because his "work ethic is just not good enough", adding that the controversial Australian "cannot grow up".

Frenchwoman Bartoli dismissed his hopes by saying he is incapable of putting seven wins together, branding him and her compatriot Gael Monfils as "pathetic".

Kyrgios resonded to Bartoli's broadside on social media. "We'll see who gets through that".

Nick Kyrgios hit back at Marion Bartoli's stinging criticism of himself and Gael Monfils by stating "we know you have to remain relevant, but we don't care what you have to say".

"You know, it's easy to criticise people when you don't know them".

Australian Kyrgios has yet to reach the semi-final of a Grand Slam and will play Kei Nishikori in the third round on Saturday.

The umpire later come down to literally explain Kyrgios how the foot fault rule really goes.

Kyrgios cast aside Robin Haase 6-3 6-4 7-5 in 96 minutes, the 15th seed having more problems with his entourage than the Dutchman in a second-round mismatch.

The "best backhand in the world" stands between Kyrgios and his now customary place in the business week at Wimbledon.

There we have it, Croatia will face England on Wednesday (July 11 ) for the semi-final stage of the tournament. Ivan Rakitic scored the victor from the spot as Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev dived the opposite direction.

No Kyrgios match could pass off completely peacefully though and he twice got into dispute with umpire James Keothavong - once over a foot fault being called and on another occasion when a line judge reported him for swearing.

"Grass is probably his least favourite surface, but he's capable on all surfaces".

He was excited about the prospect of an all-Aussie third round, but Bernard Tomic fell to Nishikori despite winning the opening set.

Nishikori has claimed the underdog card against a player boasting 159 aces in his past six matches. "I lost my serve, lost focus", Kyrgios said post-match.

"But I believe that I would have chance to win if I could bring many points into long exchanges and rallies".

Kyrgios accepts he must control his emotions in order to survive what shapes as his sternest test yet of his title credentials.

"It's hard for me to find the balance sometimes".

Playing the best tennis of his life, 30-year-old Ebden is through to the third round of a major for the first time too following a 6-3 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-1 success against veteran qualifier Stephane Robert.
