TRUMP TAKES EUROPE: The President Says Germany 'A CAPTIVE' of Russian Federation

He's also badgering allies to meet a 2 percent target that only five of the 29 members now meet.

Trump's harsh words for Merkel, whose country has hosted tens of thousands of USA troops that have been key to post-WWII stability in Europe for seven decades, struck at the core of the alliance. "We can't put up with it", he said. We're stronger together than apart.

Trump kept going, saying previous American leaders have mentioned the 2 percent issue but either did not understand like he does or "didn't want to get involved". "To me, this is nearly like propaganda, it really tells you how far out we're getting here and what sort of an influence that Trump is able to exert".

During a heated breakfast meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg Wednesday, Trump said Germany pays billions of dollars to Russian Federation and "we have to defend them against Russian Federation".

Trump used Germany as an example.

Germany and other European Nato partners argue, however, that they have boosted contributions to the military alliance and plan to kick in even more in coming years. Asked if they had discussed the pipeline, he said they had, but declined to elaborate. "We decide our own policies and make our own decisions".

Trump has preferred to take aim at allies.

"We are willing to increase our defence spending as agreed in Wales". But Trump's demands threaten that outcome.

"It was also because of your leadership", Stoltenberg told Trump.

During a working breakfast that marked the start of the summit, Trump claimed Germany is "controlled" by Russian Federation due to an energy partnership between the two countries.

Trump repeatedly described Germany as "captive to Russia" because of the energy deal and urged North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to look into the issue.

Merkel said she raised issues of migration and economic development with Trump. "Explain that. And it can't be explained, you know that".

Sen. Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican, also criticized Trump's rhetoric. Munich's Süddeutsche Zeitung headlined its story: "It is not only bad, it is catastrophic".

Trump took issue with Nord Stream 2, a new $11-billion pipeline to bring Russian gas across the Baltic Sea that Berlin has supported despite qualms from other European Union states.

By slapping higher tariffs on European Union metals experts and threatening more on cars, Trump has shown his anger at the USA trade deficit with the European Union.

Trump also is expected to meet with French president Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said. "Frankly, Putin may be the easiest of them all", Trump said Tuesday before departing for Brussels.
