Tour de France

Cholet: "I'm rapt as dunny paper with that one, it was a super ride by the boys", said a justifiably elated Richie Porte after the Australian and his teammates got his Tour de France campaign back on track with an impressive stage three team time trial win on Monday.

BMC clocked 38 minutes 46 seconds as their Belgian rider Greg van Avermaet took the overall leader's yellow jersey, with Sky in second place four seconds behind.

Movistar could only manage 10th place on the day, 50 seconds off Team Sky's pace, which means Froome is nearly back on level terms with Mikel Landa and Alejandro Valverde, while Nairo Quintana dropped even further back after his opening day woes.

Tom Dumoulin led the way for Sunweb, putting in a big shift over the early climb and another onto the final run-in, before swinging off for Michael Matthews to lead them home 11 seconds in arrears to BMC Racing.

"Just going on the feeling, I think we can be pretty happy", Froome said.

Froome's misfortune is a boost for France's Romain Bardet, seen along with Quintana as the four-time champion's main rival in this year's race, and also for Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, the 2017 Giro d'Italia victor.

Thomas missed out on the yellow jersey by just three seconds, having started the day sixth in the general classification and one second up on Van Avermaet.

"There will be a lot more time lost throughout the GC group before we hit the mountains". He also wore the yellow jersey in three stages at the Tour de France two years ago.

The role of prime minister has also been eliminated, and the president will now be able to pick his own Cabinet. Erdogan has now become both the head of state and government; and the prime minister's post is abolished.

"There was way too much wind for me", said the slightly-built Porte.

It was also a very satisfying day for Froome, the Kenyan-born Briton ignoring some booing at the start line and making up some of the valuable time he lost on Saturday's first stage.

Among the top contenders, last year's runner-up Rigoberto Uran of Colombia is 10th, 35 seconds behind.

Times were taken from the fourth rider on each eight-man team to cross the line. "It's a long way to go, we still have six more hectic days and then we have also got the Alps and the Pyrenees".

There were no surprises for Movistar's Quintana, who lost another chunk of time to Froome, to whom he came second on the Tour twice.

Wrong! The Tour de France's stage 3 TTT was an important part of the battle for the yellow jersey.

"This makes up for previous year", he said.

The Tour resumes tomorrow with the 195 km flat stage four that runs between La Baule and Sarzeau.
