Scientists search for meteorite pieces off Washington coast

Some people even thought that this is the sound of a space ship.

It wasn't a spaceship, but it was definitely a visitor from outer space. Approximately two tons of fragments scattered on the runway is a mile long.

NASA's curator of cosmic dust, Mark Fries, says the fragments must be examined more closely to confirm they came from the meteor but he's optimistic.

In one evening in early March, Washington State residents witnessed a bright flash of light and heard a mysterious boom.

Some of the debris from the meteorite is believed to be as big as a brick, and the mission will try to retrieve as much of it as possible.

Joined by scientists from NASA, the University of Washington and the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, the Nautilus will use remote-operated submarines to survey the area and collect any fragments they find, it added.

Ahead of the July 4th mission of the OET's flagship, the Nautilus, the OET will send a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) mission to explore the ocean around the predicted crash site. The OET, which previously discovered the wreckage of the Titanic, agreed to donate a day of their technical expertise to the endeavor.

This mission of meteorite exploration would reportedly be headed by Dr. Nicole Raineault, the Vice-president of Exploration and Science Operations for the Ocean Exploration Trust.

Also noteworthy is that every piece found becomes the property of the research department of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. "This one is tougher than your typical meteor", he said in a statement, reports Mashable. A live stream video of the expedition will be available at www.nautiluslive.org if you want to follow the search.
