North Korean officials did not show up for a planned meeting with USA officials at the demilitarized zone (DMZ), where they were expected to continue discussions on repatriating the remains of Americans killed during the Korean War.

Kim said he hoped the process between the two sides would lead to "practical actions" in the future, though he offered no specifics, and that there would be a second meeting between the two leaders.

A confidential U.S. report sent to a United Nations sanctions committee estimated that at least 759,793 barrels of oil products had been delivered to North Korea between January 1 and May 30, well above the annual quota set at 500,000 barrels.

North Korea proposed to reschedule the meeting for Sunday.

He praised officials of the county, which is close to Mount Paektu, the spiritual home of the Korean people and claimed by Pyongyang's propaganda to be the actual birthplace of his father and predecessor Kim Jong Il.

Separately, the U.S. has accused North Korea of violating a United Nations sanctions cap on refined oil products.

He said he saw a big difference in North Korea's attitudes to talks.

Trump has expressed an eagerness to tout the recovery of the war dead, telling Fox News that Kim was "giving us back the remains of probably 7,500 soldiers". "Great progress being made", he wrote.

The English translation of the four-paragraph document was tweeted by Mr Trump on Thursday.

Dated July 6, the note was likely the one given to Pompeo during his visit to Pyongyang last week.

Although tensions have eased up since President Trump met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore last month, talks on denuclearization have hit a rocky spot since then.

Between 1996 and 2005, some 33 recovery operations were conducted in North Korea which saw 200 sets of remains returned.

North Korea watchers downplayed the significance of the letter.
