Unai Emery held his first press conference at Arsenal's training ground, the London Coloney and he was asked on whether he will seek some advice from his predecessor Arsene Wenger as he goes into his first season at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners' last additions to the squad, aimed at strengthening their midfield, have been Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi.

"The big clubs don't close the [door] or the moment to sign a new player".

"Today, we are okay".

The situation alerted Arsenal with Sky Italia journalist Gianluza Di Marzio claiming earlier this month that the Gunners were in pole position to sign Gomes after Unai Emery had identified him as a summer target.

"We signed the players who we needed and only if one player is a big opportunity for us will we sign them".

The new head coach also wants to get his players better before he appoints a new club captain.

"We've spoken about that [the captaincy]".

"My idea is to know every player and to know, also, the personality of the players", said Emery, 43.

"I know this player here is important for the supporters and grew up here in Arsenal, but I couldn't guarantee him a place in the starting 11 and because of that he choose to leave here and I respect this".

The Spaniard, who took over from Arsene Wenger in May, said Laurent Koscielny would remain his "first captain". Then we are looking for players whose personality is the best in the dressing room.

"The first two weeks for us is to start knowing the club, knowing the players, knowing all the people who are working with us". He only has a year left on his current deal.

But, Emery insisted his squad needs to be bursting at the seams with players willing to step up. "Now, I want to look, I want to work every day with all the goalkeepers and then I am going to decide for [who is No 1]". His future is a question for the player and club.
