Brazil's Dani Alves ruled out of World Cup with knee injury

Paris St Germain's Brazil defender, Dani Alves, needs at least three weeks of intensive treatment on a knee injury suffered in the French Cup final on Tuesday.

The Brazilian team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, flew to Paris to examine the player and decided surgery was necessary after diagnosing an injury to his right anterior cruciate ligament.

Brazil right back Dani Alves will miss the World Cup and stay off the pitch for about six months after he goes through a knee surgery.

The 35-year-old becomes the second Brazilian to suffer a serious injury with fellow full-back Filipe Luis already out of the tournament with a broken leg.

"Exhausted all the alternatives of recovery within the term, the call-up of Daniel Alves was found impossible for the period of preparation, friendlies and, consequently, for the World Cup".

"As a result of the damage done to Dani Alves' right knee during the Coupe de France final, the latest tests have confirmed the initial diagnosis", it said.

Brazil will announce its squad on Monday in Rio de Janeiro.

The south American counter are the most successful country in the championship - winning the trophy five times in their history, followed by Germany and Italy with four titles each.

Brazil will play warm-up matches against Croatia on June 3 and Austria seven days later, before kicking off their World Cup campaign on June 17 against Switzerland.

The news is a major blow to Brazil head coach Tite, who in February named Alves as one of the 15 players guaranteed a place in his final 23-man squad.

He was a FIFA World Youth Champion with Brazil in 2003.
