Punjab CM appeals to maintain peace and harmony

Breaking his silence in the road rage case, wherein his cabinet minister Navjot Singh Sidhu is the prime accused, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday said the government could not have taken any other stand in the Supreme Court.

The Chief Minister pointed out that the Supreme Court had stayed Sidhu's conviction in the road rage case in 2007 and was yet to pronounce its verdict on his petition challenging the high court order.

The road rage incident dates back to December 27, 1988, when Sidhu had allegedly punched one 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in Patiala, Punjab, resulting in the latter's death.

Contending that Punjab government's move to appoint MLAs as legislative assistants would amount to circumventing the Punjab and Haryana high court verdict, passed while setting setting aside the appointment of chief parliamentary secretaries (CPSs), a legal notice has been sent to the state to not go ahead with the move.

"There was neither any impediment in Sidhu's induction into the cabinet nor in his continuation now, in view of the stay on his conviction", Amarinder said in a statement here.

The categorical clarification from the Chief Minister came amid reports suggesting that Sidhu had been asked to resign, and also in the wake of the demand from the opposition that he should step down.

However, the Punjab CM said he is hopeful that the court would look at the Sidhu contribution to the country and society, before announcing its final verdict.

Reacting to reports suggesting that the government had deliberately not supported the minister in the apex court, the Chief Minister stressed that unless the prosecution received new inputs, it was not legally possible for it to add a new element to its arguments.

The victim's family had appealed to the Supreme Court that earlier imprisonment sentence of three years given by the Punjab and Haryana High Court should be enhanced.
