The Midfielder's facing a charge of drink-driving from St Patrick's Day, to which he's pleaded guilty.

In a statement after the crash, Sunderland wrote: 'Sunderland AFC has suspended Darron Gibson with immediate effect, after the player was charged with driving with excess alcohol on Saturday 17 March.

The former Sunderland midfielder - who has since had his contract terminated by the Championship club - is said to have smashed his 4x4 Mercedes into parked cars.

His grey 4×4 ended up on the pavement and the road was strewn with debris.

The magistrate said the offence was aggravated by the length of time over which it occurred, and his failure to stop or report the damage caused to the taxi.

He said: 'Mr Gibson, this is the second offence in less than three years'.

Aggravating factors included the damaged caused to the parked vehicles.

Gibson will be sentenced on May 25 after medical reports are provided.

Mrs Laverick said: "The defendant was spoken to at the roadside, police officers established he was under the influence".

The Derry native appeared in South Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Tuesday having been charged with being over the drink-driving limit on St. Patrick's Day.
