Fifty-seven percent of respondents give Cuomo a negative rating for his job performance as governor, the poll found.

In their view of Cuomo, 49 percent had a favorable one and 44 percent view him negatively.

Cuomo last had such low numbers in July 2015, Siena said.

In a head-to-head matchup with Ms. Nixon, an educational activist and actress making her first run for public office, Mr. Cuomo still leads, 58 percent to 27 percent. The governor may still have a sizable lead, 58 to 27 percent, but just last month his margin over Nixon was 66 to 19 percent, and the actress didn't officially declare she was running for governor until March 19.

"Early on, Cuomo seems to be in a strong position again to be the Democratic Party's standard-bearer", said Steven Greenberg of the Siena College poll. In a variation of Bette Davis' famous line: "fasten your seatbelts; it's going to be a bumpy ride", Greenberg said.

But if we just look at Democrats for Cuomo and Nixon, right now Cuomo has a 62-32 percent favorability rating among Democrats, compared to Cynthia Nixon's 33 to 23.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Government watchdog groups are renewing their call on Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the NY state Legislature to agree on measures that will strengthen transparency and crack down on corruption.

Greenberg pointed out Cuomo four years ago won the Democratic primary against Zephyr Teachout with 63 percent of the vote when only 11 percent of Democrats voted.

The poll of 692 registered voters was conducted from April 8 to April 12. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.
