Judge sets March trial date for AT&T merger fight

The trial to decide whether AT&T can buy Time Warner will start March 19, a federal district judge said on Thursday.

Judge Richard Leon at the US District Court for the District of Columbia set the date in a pre-trial hearing, according to Reuters.

The U.S. Justice Department last month sued to block AT&T's planned acquisition of Time Warner, saying the combination could raise prices for rivals and pay-TV subscribers while hampering the development of online video.

AT&T asked the court to hear the case beginning February 20. The government was pressing for May 7.

Failing to consummate the deal by then, under the current terms, means AT&T would pay Time Warner $500M.
