Trump Says He Wants Orrin Hatch To Run For Re-Election

"We hope you will continue to serve your state and the country in the Senate for a very long time to come", Trump said.

Hatch will accompany Trump on his trip to Salt Lake, to his meetings and the signing of an executive order that will reduce the size of the Bears Ears and Escalante national monuments.

Trump's former chief strategist Steve Bannon reportedly also has considered endorsing Hatch to block Romney, the Washington Examiner reported Sunday, with a source telling the newspaper Bannon would pick Hatch "10 times out of 10".

Earlier this year 83-year-old Utah Senator Orrin Hatch said he'd consider retiring in 2018 if he could find someone "really outstanding" to run for his seat, and called Romney "perfect" for the position.

There's been less coverage of Trump's affinity for Senator Hatch, but it's similarly easy to understand. "Mitt's a good man".

Trump has been urging Hatch to run long before Romney entered the conversation, according to the senator's office.

The president's mostly behind-the-scenes campaign to sway Hatch will burst into public view on Monday, when he arrives in Salt Lake City to hold a well-choreographed event created to showcase his affection for the powerful Senate Finance Committee chairman. Their suspicions are warranted: Trump has sounded off to friends about how he doesn't like the idea of a Senator Romney, Politico reports.

When asked if he was sending a message to Romney, who was an outspoken critic of Trump during the 2016 campaign, that he doesn't want him to run, Trump paused and said, "He's a good man. Mitt's a good man".

The technology company reported $0.31 earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter, beating the consensus estimate of $0.28 by $0.03. The difference between the expected and actual EPS was $0.03/share, which represents an Earnings surprise of 10.7%.

If he chooses to run, Hatch will begin the election year with a pair of hard-fought victories.

Romney has been considering a Senate run for months, but he may only seek for the GOP nomination if Hatch declines to run for another term.

Trump has mostly tried to sway Hatch behind the scenes.

Trump's opposition to Senator Romney isn't that surprising.

Romney, a former governor of MA who spends a great deal of time in Utah, has been expecting to run for Hatch's seat in a state that Republicans typically win.

Monday's visit is the culmination of recent complimentary exchanges between Trump and Hatch.

"He's not afraid to make decisions", Hatch said during an interview broadcast by MSNBC.
