The largest blaze, the Thomas Fire, burned more than 36,000 hectares after it destroyed more than 150 homes and threatened thousands more in Ventura, about 80 km northwest on Los Angeles.

Another brush fire was sparked early Wednesday morning not far from the Getty Center along the 405 Freeway.

It was the worst of four fires that by late Tuesday had burned more than 66,000 acres in Southern California, prompting Gov.

More than 1,000 firefighters worked through the night protecting buildings, including City Hall, where the flames reached the parking lot, destroyed a couple of cars and left an adjacent hillside blackened and smoldering.

"We are in the beginning of a protracted wind event", said Ken Pimlott, director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Chef and restaurateur José Andrés, whose World Central Kitchen organized chef volunteers and donations to serve more than 3 million meals to victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, in a tweet indicated that his crew was on the way to Los Angeles to work with the Red Cross to feed those displaced by fire.

"We're really just trying to catch it around the edges and just pinching it off as quickly as we possibly can", Ventura County firefighter Jason Hodge told the Los Angeles Times.

Elsewhere, use of firefighting aircraft has been constrained by the same winds that have spread the fires.

Wild winds could easily send make new fires explode too, as one did Wednesday in Los Angeles' exclusive Bel-Air section, where a fire consumed multimillion-dollar houses that give the rich and famous sweeping views of Los Angeles.

Another fire, named the Skirball fire, reportedly began near the Sepulveda Pass in Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, and is now at zero percent containment.

The flames have swallowed about 80,000 acres (32,000 hectares) in just over a day since the "Thomas" fire, now the state's largest, broke out, leaving at least one dead in an area about 45 minutes from downtown LA.

One key facet of helping protect people from wildfires is preventing and avoiding them in the first place.
