"What a day! What a day for love, for quality, for respect!"

"This is a great day, it belongs to every Australian".

Amendments made by conservatives to the cross-party same-sex marriage bill are said to be defeated with leader of the house, Christopher Pyne, stating he will oppose them.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's government introduced the bill after Australians overwhelmingly voted in support of same-sex marriage in a national vote.

Forster was joined in the public gallery by her partner, Virginia Edwards.

The Senate voted decisively in favour of the legislation last week.

"These amendments are important and I stress they are not against same-sex marriage, they are simply in favor of the rights of religious organizations to keep doing what their doing", Abbott said.

On Monday, the debate on the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Bill 2017 kicked off in the House of Representatives. On Thursday night, Queensland MP Bob Katter, who went viral for his dismissal of gay marriage in light of fatal crocodile attacks, delivered a 15-minute speech declaring that same-sex marriage was not of interest of gay couples because heterosexual couples weren't getting married either.

"She said: Dad, in the years to come, my generation will look back and judge your generation about how you deal with the issue of homosexuality in the same way that your generation considered your parents' generation in the way that they dealt with our Indigenous people", Wallace said.

The decision comes after more than 12.7 million people took part in the eight-week postal survey and voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage.

A nonbinding postal survey found that 62 percent of Australian respondents wanted gay marriage to be legal.

Many supporters of the Bill travelled to Canberra to witness the outcome of the parliamentary process.

Liberal backbencher Kevin Andrews, who is against same-sex marriage, believes the bill contains very little protection for religion and belief.
