Killer Claims He's Too Ill to Be Executed

A prison department spokeswoman said in a statement on Monday that officials will provide Campbell with a wedge-shaped pillow to help make his breathing easier.

An Ohio death row inmate is claiming he's too ill to be executed.

Seems Campbell suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder due to decades smoking. As a result he's asking the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the execution.

An exam also failed to find veins suitable for inserting an IV on either of Campbell's arms.

Dr. James McWeeney noted there were no objective findings such as increased pulse rate or breathing to corroborate Campbell's anxiety. Still, McWeeney recommended Campbell lie "in a semi-recumbent position" during his execution.

Earlier this month, Campbell lost a bid to be executed by firing squad after a federal judge questioned whether lawmakers would enact the bill needed to allow the method.

He was sentenced to die for killing a teenager during a 1997 carjacking.

Campbell, who has a lengthy arrest record, first went to jail in 1967, when he was 19 years old, for shooting a state trooper, Dayton Daily News reported.

Campbell was paroled in 1992 after serving 20 years for killing a man in a Cleveland bar. While in a wheelchair, Campbell overpowered the deputy and fled.

Campbell took the deputy's gun, carjacked Charles Dials' auto and drove around with him for several hours. Dials, 18, while crouched in the footwell of his own truck, was shot twice in the head by Campbell, court records showed.

The state says the siblings of an OH teen slain during a carjacking two decades ago will witness the execution of their brother's killer.

Campbell was regularly beaten, sexually abused and tortured as a child, his attorneys have argued in court filings and before the Ohio Parole Board.

Campbell's last meal, called a special meal in OH, includes pork chops, greens, sweet potato pie, mashed potatoes and gravy and macaroni and cheese.

The Department of Rehabilitation and Correction says Tuesday that the brother and sister of Charles Dials will be in the witness area on Wednesday to watch condemned inmate Alva Campbell be put to death.
