It followed a controversial referendum on the secession of the Kurdish region, which was held on September 25 in defiance of strong objection from Baghdad and Iraq's neighbors, particularly Iran and Turkey.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Kurdish regional government says "we respect" the November 6 decision by the Supreme Federal Court, an indication they may be willing to back down in the standoff with Baghdad.

The Kurdish government also called on launching a peaceful dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad to address their differences.

Its decisions can not be appealed, though it has no mechanism to enforce its ruling in the Kurdish region.
