Android distribution numbers for November show nearly no change for Oreo

Android 8.1 Oreo will free up space by shrinking apps you don't use

Android 8.1 Oreo will free up space by shrinking apps you don't use

Currently, only 0.3% of the devices that visited the Google Play Store in early November were running Android 8.0 Oreo operating system.

A new analysis of Android's notorious update problems suggests patching is actually getting worse over time. Google's latest release may have been pushed out the door months ago, but that doesn't mean it's available for even a fraction of the devices now in the wild. But, now that the distribution numbers are out, we do know which Android versions have gained more share in the chart and which ones have dropped. "Unfortunately, with this data alone, we can't tell why the slope is shallower". As for why uptake is slowing, Luu deduces that there could be three possible explanations: Android growth is slowing, device turnover is slowing and/or fewer devices are receiving updates.

The programmer also picked up on another worrying landmark during his analysis.

One billion outdated Android devices. The situation won't improve by much since HMD and Huawei are the ones that will offer Android 8.0 Oreo updates for some of its smartphones by the end of the year. Also, this means that low internal storage devices - midrange and budget phones - will still have to run Android Oreo to take advantage of this upcoming feature.

This was ahead of 3.6 million fitness trackers and other basic wearables shipped by Xiaomi and 3.5 million by Fitbit . It posted its strongest quarter so far in 2017, thanks to the release of the Apple Watch Series 3.

Android and Apple fans can argue endlessly about who stole what and which phones are better, but there is at least one area where Android has consistently failed to keep up with its biggest rival: fragmentation.

Year after year, owners of expensive flagship devices are forced to wait more than six months for OS updates and the problem is showing no signs of abating. Maybe Android Oreo can help us out.
